Aussies Beware! Fake MyGov Texts Phishing for Crypto Tax Info

Australians are being warned about a new wave of SMS scams targeting cryptocurrency holders. These messages impersonate the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and claim the recipient is accused of crypto tax evasion.

The scam urges victims to click a link and "connect their wallet" to rectify the issue. This link leads to a fake MyGov page designed to steal personal and financial information.

The ATO stresses they will never contact taxpayers via SMS or email with login links. Here's how to stay safe:

  • Don't click on links in suspicious messages.
  • Contact the ATO directly through their official website (https://www.ato.gov.au/) if unsure about a message.
  • Never share personal or financial details online unless certain it's a legitimate website.

Stay vigilant and report any suspicious messages to authorities.
